Living Cost and Study plan

Living costs are relatively low in Hungary, and while tuition fees are not insignificant, they are much lower than those charges in countries such as the US or UK. As an example, at Eötvös Loránd University, fees as of 2013 are as follows: €2,500-4,200 (US$3,400-5,700) per semester for a bachelor’s degree; €3,000-5,000 (4,000-6,800) for a master’s degree; €4,500-5,500 ($6,000-7,400) for a PhD. The university advises budgeting around €60 ($80) per month for health insurance, €200-500 ($270-680) for rented accommodation, and €200 ($270) per month for utility bills.

Some scholarships for international students are available from the Hungarian Scholarship Board. These can only be applied for after receiving a letter of acceptance from a Hungarian university, and fall into seven categories, covering different levels and periods of study or research.

Students from within the EU may also be able to apply for a state-funded place, under the same system as local students. These are awarded based on academic grades, but are highly competitive, with the number of places available having been cut over the past few years. Students from Eastern Europe can also apply for scholarships from the Visegrad Fund.
